Poppy is the first in an occasional series of classic minimalist dolls inspired by a Biographie workshop I did some years ago and recently was brought to mind by family events. I wanted to be able to relatively quickly create a doll that expressed a time in my life, a feeling, an emotion. Poppy is my expression of a watercolour painting I created at the workshop that represented the colour of my childhood and a symbol that spoke to me of that time, an intensely sunny, yellow, warm wash of colour and a small unfurling pinky red poppy at its centre, symbolising hopefulness, bravery and vulnerability.
I hope you can see in her simplicity, the strength and fragility of childhood. I adore the hand dyed yarns I found to create her clothes, the warmth and intensity for me correspond to my memories of my island childhood in this strange but profoundly beautiful place.
Poppy is 16" tall and of course made from all natural fibres, cotton knit skin fabric, pure wool stuffing. Her hair is a hand dyed mohair and her face has been embroidered with woollen embroidery threads and gently blushed with coloured beeswax.
I followed no patterns for her clothes, just made them up as I went along, informed by the feel and colours of the yarns. She wears a knitted woollen smock top and bloomers and super sunny shoes perfect for skipping her way through life and helping to show her the happiness of the sunshine even in dark times.
I hope you will consider bringing Poppy into your home.
This doll is a collectors item and not suitable for children under the age of four years due to choking hazards.
